How to Stop Worrying about Personal Data and Start Thinking about Digital Identity?

In the last week of December, we reconvened at a discussion club meeting and discussed digital identity and personal data.

Protecting the digital rights of citizens today is acutely on the agenda. Depending on the professional area, everyone understands different aspects of digital rights: from new types of rights that have arisen with the beginning of computerization and the production of digital works, to an expanded interpretation of basic human rights in their digital dimension. First of all, most people are concerned about maintaining information privacy. We leave a large amount of personal data when performing various actions both online and offline. Given the current situation, it seems that the current system of personal data protection does not solve the tasks. But what if personal data itself is not so important in protecting information privacy?

During the stream, we covered the following questions:

  • What are digital rights?
  • Which digital rights violation has the greatest impact? Who should be in charge of protection?
  • How does the average user perceive the endless media reports of personal data leaks? Is there privacy at all?
  • By law, citizens' personal data must be protected from misuse, but in practice this is not always the case.
  • How does the business deal with it? Does it make sense to protect PD on their own?
  • Is the context of the generated or retrieved data important to protecting information privacy? What about digital identities?
  • Regulatory paradigms for PD: do you need a stick, a carrot, or both?

Guests:

  • Alexey Muntyan - founder and CEO of Privacy Advocates, co-founder and member of the Board of the Russian Privacy Professionals Association
  • Rimma Chichakyan — LLM of Manchester (UK), Doctor of Law at the University of Turin (Italy), Fellow and Visiting Researcher at the Max Planck Institute for International Private Law and Comparative Law (Hamburg, Germany), Project Manager for Effective Regulation, ANO Digital Economy
  • Anna Ignatenko - journalist, founder of the supernova (media about the future and the Internet)

The discussion club “Digital Reality” has been in existence for 2.5 years. It has evolved from an event for alumni of the Summer School on Internet Governance into full-fledged expert meetings.

A recording of the December meeting can be viewed on our YouTube channel.

We look forward to seeing you in the discussions in the new year!
