Winners of IP&IT LAW 2024 internet law competition announced

The winners have been announced of the 9th IP&IT LAW 2024 Russian Youth Contest on Intellectual Property and Information Technologies Law organized by the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ and the IP CLUB under the auspices of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

About 90 works presented by young researchers from 15 Russian regions have been submitted to the contest.

The jury included experts on intellectual property and information technology law. The jury’s collegial assessment included the creative nature, originality, completeness of disclosure of the topic stated, and constructive ideas and proposals.

The creators of the best works and laureates of IP&IT LAW 2024 are:

  • Alexander Babenko, Regulation of Generative Neural Networks (graduate, Saratov State Law Academy)
  • Konstantin Kraulin, Prospects for Compulsory Copyright Licensing in the Russian Federation Using the example of Belarus (postgraduate student, Faculty of Law, State Academic University for the Humanities)
  • Matvei Chernyshov, Problems of Algorithms’ Legal Protection (Master at St. Petersburg State University)

By tradition, the places awarded to the winners are kept secret until the awards ceremony, which this year will be held on April 22 at the Center of International and Comparative Law Research Center, as part of the opening of Intellectual Property Week and the panel discussion, “Significant Precedents in IP/IT” timed to coincide with it.

The contest winners will receive cash prizes from the organizers. In addition, all winners will be offered internships at the Intellectual Rights Court, and the first place winner will additionally be awarded a paid internship for up to two months at Egorov, Puginsky, Afanasiev & Partners. The winners’ works are recommended by the competition jury for publication in the Journal of the Intellectual Rights Court.

The winners of the IP&IT LAW 2024 special categories have been announced.

The special category, Artificial Intelligence Alliance:

  • 1st place: Alexander Babenko, Regulation of Generative Neural Networks (graduate, Saratov State Law Academy)
  • 2nd place: Ivan Vishnyakov, Regulation of Generative Neural Networks (Institute of Legislation and Comparative Law under the Government of the Russian Federation)
  • 3rd place: Alexander Osokin, Regulation of Generative Neural Networks, Lomonosov Moscow State University

ALRUD special category:
Konstantin Kraulin, Prospects for Compulsory Copyright Licensing in the Russian Federation Using the example of Belarus (State Academic University for the Humanities)

Semenov & Pevzner special category:
Nikita Peremit, Methods of Combating Trolling in Copyright, as well as Other Types of Trolling (St. Petersburg Institute, branch of the RLA of the Ministry of Justice of Russia)

Savina Legal special category:
Semyon Komarov, Problems of Algorithm Legal Protection (Griboyedov Moscow University)

It was decided not to award a winner in the Zuikov & Partners special category.

IP&IT LAW has been held since 2015. In 2018, it was awarded the Runet Prize in the special category For a Contribution in the Development of Legal Thought in Digital Society, and in 2022 it was listed in Pravo.Ru’s rankings of the main legal competitions and olympiads.

The goals of IP&IT LAW 2024 include identifying promising areas in the field of digital law, protection of intellectual rights in the digital environment, and legal support for e-business; encouraging the growth of research activities; and attracting state and public attention to the legal aspects of the digital economy.

In 2024, the contest’s partners and information sponsors include: Artificial Intelligence Alliance, Statut Law School, Garant system, Zuikov & Partners, Russian Agency of Legal and Court Information, Consultant Plus system, Law Academy, Journal of Digital Technologies and Law, and International Journal of Law in a Changing World among others.
