.COM zone tops 160 million domains for the first time

On February 17, the number of domain names in the .COM zone exceeded 160 million for the first time. According to statistics from Verisign, which operates the .COM generic top-level domain, the total number of .COM registrations reached 162,479,075 on that day, of which 160,009,277 were included in the zone file. This marks another record milestone for the domain.

The zone file includes domain names with active DNS servers – that is, domains fully configured and ready for use online. Reporting on the development, Domain Incite noted that the .COM domain reached the 150 million mark on January 13, 2021. In other words, it took just over five years for .COM to add 10 million registrations.

Not all of those years were smooth for .COM and Verisign: in 2024 and 2025, the number of registrations in the generic top-level domain declined. However, based on statistics from recent quarters, the downturn appears to have been overcome, and the undisputed leader of the domain name market has returned to steady growth.
